Are instant start ballasts an option for you? This is one possible solution being offered by Hubbell lighting in their July 26th announcement (see below). Another possibility are distributor supplied program start ballasts - a logical solution but potentially a very costly one assuming of course these ballasts are sitting on distributor's shelves. The longer this shortage drags on the less likely this becomes.
As we covered in earlier posts, this component shortage is not exclusive to only lighting ballast manufacturers. In a recent (off-the-record) conversation with a leading wiring device manufacturer, we were forewarned to expect long delays in certain occupancy sensor and dimmer products. You can bet that there will be a wide impact across all finished goods manufacturing. The electrical industry is just now feeling the effects of what the consumer electronics industry have been forecasting and dealing with since last year.
This will be the 5th article we're posting on this ballast shortage issue. Our objective is to educate and prepare our clients so to avoid any unnecessary, unpleasant surprises. In order to provide a more convenient source for information on this issue, we have created a dedicated page on our site called: Lighting Ballast Shortage. This page will include all Connexion's ballast shortage articles as well as key insights into this issue from other new sources.
The advice we're hearing from all manufacturers is basically the same; Release your orders immediately.
Doing so will put your product in the manufacturing que. You can always stipulate a "do not ship before" date.
Here is the communication from Hubbell Lighting to their distributors:
Kudos for Hubbell for formally addressing this issue. Obviously, using instant start or distributor supplied ballasts won't work in all applications, it is though something to consider - much like Lutron's dimming solution. At this stage of the game, any solution should be considered on a case-by-case basis. It could mean the difference between finishing a job or the unpleasant alternative.
This post can be found on our new Lighting Ballast Shortage page. This page consolidates all the articles we've been posting on this issue as well as insights from other industries impacted by this electronic component shortage.
