The news of the fluorescent ballast shortage has pretty much made its way around our industry now. After doing some research and fact-checking we posted this news on June 25th. Since then the only manufacturer to formally acknowledge this shortage was Philips Lightolier and we posted their response on June 29th.
Manufacturers generally aren't usually quick to report material shortages, lest the news create opportunity for competing brands. We applaud Philips Lightolier for getting in front of this issue - and Lutron for reminding us that they are not just a lighting control manufacturer but also a ballast manufacturer who is not experiencing any shortages. While Lutron's reminder may seem opportunistic, it's also a valuable reminder that there's another alternative to on-off switching.
According to The Lighting Controls Association (LCA), dimming linear fluorescent lamps can provide a number of significant benefits to owners of commercial lighting systems:
- Flexibility, enabling the lighting system to adapt to multiple activities and changing space needs.
- Cost savings, derived from direct energy savings as well as load reduction during peak demand periods, which can be accelerated by using dimming ballasts in a system that can also include occupancy sensors, daylight sensors and time-clocks.
- Higher worker comfort, satisfaction and performance, achieved by allowing occupants to choose their own light levels.
- Increased lamp life for applications where lamps can be dimmed instead of frequently switched.
Dimmable fluorescent systems combine the long life and energy efficiency of fluorescent lamps with the controllability and full-range dimming capabilities of incandescent systems.
The following is an overview (and a good refresher) of Lutron's ballast offering:
EcoSystem®
EcoSystem ballasts are part of a revolutionary lighting control system composed of digitally addressable electronic dimming ballasts, controls and sensors. EcoSystem generates energy savings of 40% to 70%, improves occupant comfort and productivity, and increases space flexibility. |
|
Hi-Lume® 3D
Hi-lume 3D offers less than 1% dimming, efficiency comparable to non-dim ballasts (up to 100 lumens per watt), and the ability to use both 3-wire and digital controls. Combine with EcoSystem controls for energy savings between 40% and 70%. |
|
Hi-Lume®
Experience the benefits of true full-range 100% to 1% fluorescent dimming. Designed to meet the most demanding lighting requirements, Hi-lume ballasts help provide the ideal lighting environment for any application. |
|
Compact SE®
Compact SE ballasts are the ideal solution for designs requiring the energy savings and aesthetic appeal of dimmed compact fluorescent lamps. The Compact SE product family includes ballasts for nearly every type of compact fluorescent lamp and are compatible with Lutron 3-wire fluorescent controls. |
|
Tu-Wire®
Retrofit and small-space applications can benefit from the ease of installation offered by Lutron Tu-Wire dimming ballasts. Tu-Wire ballasts offer high performance 100% to 5% dimming for linear and compact fluorescent lamps. |
|
Eco-10®
To maximize the benefits of a lighting management system, use Eco-10 dimming ballasts by Lutron. Eco-10 offers 100% to 10% dimming. These ballasts are well suited for saving energy, while also maintaining exceptional lighting performance. |
|
Hi-Lume A-Series® LED Driver
The Hi-lume A-Series LED driver is the world’s first LED driver to offer smooth, continuous 1% dimming for virtually any LED fixture – whether it requires constant current or constant voltage – making it the most versatile LED driver available today. |

We're posting this information less as a plug for Lutron (though they are one of our strategic partners), and more as a possible solution for those existing projects, with critical deadlines that can be reengineered to accomodate dimming rather than simple switching.
There's been some speculation whether this component shortage is real, unfortunately the resulting effects are very real. Our purchasing department recently reported that we're starting to see some traditional ballasts trickle in but nowhere near back to normal levels.
If you would like to explore Lutron's dimming solution on an existing or new project, please contact our lighting team.
In the meantime, we'll be staying on top of this issue and posting any updates in our industry news blog.
This post can be found on our new Lighting Ballast Shortage page. This page consolidates all the articles we've been posting on this issue as well as insights from other industries impacted by this electronic component shortage.
