Variable frequency drives: from consideration to operation

Variable frequency drives can be a cost-effective solution to reduce energy use and achieve process control in motor-driven equipment. Learn about the advantages and disadvantages of VFDs and where they make operational, energy efficiency and economic sense. We'll discuss the theory of VFD operation and look at practical applications and installations of VFDs. We'll focus on common applications where variable frequency drives are used and how they compare and contrast to other historical methods used to vary motor speed.

AS A RESULT OF THIS TRAINING, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

Describe the basic operational principles of variable frequency drives including their limitations to change and control motor speed in different types of applications.

Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using variable frequency drives in general and the types of applications where they can provide energy and operational savings.

Describe the basic operational differences among different types of variable frequency drives and why certain types of drives are used in specific operations and others are not.

Calculate the potential energy savings of using a variable frequency drive in different types of applications including fixed torque applications such as conveyor belts versus variable torque loads such as centrifugal fans, pumps and compressors.

Hybrid geothermal systems: less is more

Free on-demand webcast (originally broadcast Thursday, September 29, 2011)

Presented by Scott Hackel, PE, LEED AP, Senior Project Manager, Energy Center of Wisconsin

view webcast(or view with our alternate player)

Geothermal heat pump systems are an excellent choice for high performance heating, cooling and air conditioning, but cost is often a barrier. The solution? Go hybrid!

diagram of hybrid geothermal systemScott discusses the hybrid geothermal approach and reveals the results of an Energy Center study that examined three working hybrid systems to assess how and why they were designed, how well they are now working, and lessons learned along the way.

Scott explains why hybrid systems can be more cost effective for certain projects than other HVAC systems and how this approach impacts energy use and the environment. Scott also presents tools and resources that are available to help owners and designers assess the benefits of implementing hybrid geothermal on their building projects.

Who should watch

This presentation is designed for building designers, owners, engineers and other professionals in the energy industry interested in learning about the hybrid geothermal concept.
